Chasing World Records with Bossard Fasteners

For 2023, the team of the Academic Motorsport Club Zurich (AMZ) had set a big goal: the acceleration world record with an electric racing car. Scientific curiosity and the skills of Bossard were at the start.

The Academic Motorsport Club Zurich (AMZ) aims to push the boundaries of electric motorsport and inspire young people to engage with the challenges at the intersection of technology and business. The multidisciplinary team is a worldwide reference in student motorsport, particularly in autonomous formula racing. AMZ is committed to collaborative learning and innovation, offering students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a highly complex technical environment.

Founded in 2006 by students of ETH Zurich, AMZ develops prototypes annually for various "Formula Student" competitions in Europe. Milestones include the fully electric race car in 2010 and a pioneering achievement in the Formula Student Driverless class in 2017. Each year, a new electric race car takes to the starting line, showcasing new manual and autonomous driving capabilities.

The Challenge: In the Race for the New World Record

After two AMZ best times, the acceleration record for electric vehicles was set by the GreenTeam Stuttgart in 2022. They managed to go from 0 to 100 in just 1.461 seconds with their racer. The AMZ team couldn't let that stand and immediately set to work on the re-development of their racing vehicle for the 2023 world record hunt. Enormous acceleration forces, power, traction, and weight had to be balanced.

The Solution: With "mythen" to the Myth

The vehicle "mythen" is a highly complex system of aerodynamics, electricity, electronics, and optimized drive. These factors were addressed by a special powertrain, the innovative Powered Ground Effects System (PGE), and a rigorous lightweight strategy. The long-standing partnership with Bossard played a crucial role in this.

"We can order products from Bossard at any time and receive them in the shortest possible time. This is particularly important for our success, as quick solutions are often needed to prevent delays. In the wide range of fasteners, we always find an optimal solution and it offers us a lot of freedom in design and layout," says Samuel Vonder Mühll, Chassis Engineer at AMZ.

Summary: All Expectations Surpassed and Exceeded

The Stuttgart world record is history. "mythen" not only undercut it but exceeded everyone's expectations by a wide margin. The racer took only 0.956 seconds and 12.24 meters to enter the annals of motorsport and the history of electromobility, being the first electric vehicle to break the 1-second barrier.

The AMZ team made the impossible possible and demonstrated not only a technological peak performance with the world record but also its innovative strength.
