Step 1: Assess your needs and brainstorm your goals

Start out by thinking of what your organization needs to achieve. Get the right people together and articulate what the plans and vision for your company should be. Generalized strategic goals can usually be applied to digitalization and Industry 4.0, so you may already have these goals in place.

Here are some examples of what your strategic goals for digitalization and Industry 4.0 may be:

  • Do you need to reduce production complexity?
  • Optimize internal processes in one area or another?
  • Reduce your time to market?
  • Reduce throughput time?
  • Increase sales?
  • Decrease expenses and overhead?
  • Create better products?
  • Stay a step ahead of your competitor?
  • Integrate your entire supply chain?
  • Get better insights from the data you collect?
  • Collect better data?

Step 2: Prioritize your goals

The answer to all the questions above might be, “Yes!” but you have to narrow your focus down to what is most important to your business. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to adopt every new strategy and technology all at once, so make an ordered list of priorities. Choose a main focus or two.

When the main goal is completed, you can move on down the list. Just make sure not to stretch your budget and time too thin by trying to complete too many things at once, and make sure not to waste valuable resources on areas that may not be quite as crucial as others.

Step 3: Enlist expert help

To get the most out of your time, money, and effort, it’s best to enlist the help of someone who really understands digitalization and Industry 4.0—someone who will work closely with your organization to understand how your goals can best be achieved. There are people out there who devote their time and talent to helping companies like yours meet their goals. These people have the most up-to-date knowledge on new technologies, and they know how to tailor these technologies to suit your business’s needs.

You want to adapt technologies into what will work for your business moving forward, rather than trying to adapt your business to new technologies. Bossard’s Smart Factory Logistics team knows how to do just that.

Step 4: Create a strategy based on your goals

Goals alone won’t get you anywhere! Now is the time to take action. With the help of a professional like those described in Step 3, you can create strategies that will help you achieve the goals you set. This will look different for every company, so it’s best to work with someone who will create strategies tailor-made for YOUR success.

Here is where you decide exactly how you will use digitalization and Industry 4.0 to meet your needs. The great thing about these new technologies is that they provide an endless array of opportunities, and no two solutions will look quite the same. When you create a unique digitalization strategy for your business, you can carve out a niche in the marketplace that is yours alone.
