CZ a.s. is a multi-branch company with more than 80 years’ experience in engineering production. Located in the Czech Republic, most of their manufacturing is for the automobile industry. One of the products they are making is high quality turbochargers for commercial diesel applications.
Having started their turbocharger production in the early 1980s, CZ a.s. has been expanding their production as well as their research and development efforts each year. Their range of turbochargers include approximately ten turbocharger families suitable for engines with a displacement from 1 liter up to 16 liters. CZ a.s. is offering the complete package of turbocharger development, validation, and serial production for the customer to have it just in time.
A better fastening solution for type plates to reduce damage and improve appearance
The challenge where CZ a.s. sought our help was the attachment of type plates to the turbocharger compressor housings. In the past, hammer drive screws were used to perform this task, however, in the process, the heads of the screws were often damaged by the hammer.
The customer’s requirement was to avoid this issue and improve the appearance of the fastening solution.
A quick and visually appealing solution
Our solution for the problem at hand: speed rivets. As the name suggests, speed rivets are designed for simple and fast installation, and the process is very reliable.
The speed rivets are pre-loaded on a mandrel, where they are introduced into the nose of the riveting tool for continuous fastening of up to 70 rivets per minute. The tool then pulls the mandrel through the rivet, expanding it within the hole. This provides high clamping capability and secure joints.
In addition, speed rivets provide a superior visual design compared to the formerly used hammer drive screws. Thus, speed riveting fulfils both requirements, fast assembly and good appearance of the fastener after the assembly. The added customer benefit, of course, being cost savings due to shorter assembly times.
